Lent C. Johnson, III, MD, a board certified family practice physician from Hannibal, Missouri, will serve as President of the Missouri State Medical Association in 2010-2011. He was formally installed in St. Louis, March 27, 2010, during MSMA’s 152nd Annual Convention.
His goals for the MSMA during his tenure as President are:

To ensure that the MSMA is part of the steering process for health system reform.

To support the concept of the medical home and prevent the fragmentation of care.

To reach out to nonmember colleagues and encourage membership in organized medicine.
Dr. Johnson was born in Spencerville, Maryland. His father, Lent C. Johnson, II, MD, was a pathologist at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, in Washington D.C.
Dr. Johnson earned a BA in Biology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and received his medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington D.C. in 1979. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Johnson has practiced at the Hannibal Clinic since 1982. He served on the staff of St. Elizabeth and Levering Hospitals until they merged into Hannibal Regional Hospital in the 1990s. He also is a Past President of the Medical Staff of Hannibal Regional Hospital.
He currently serves as Medical Director of the Hannibal Clinic, as well as for Blessing Hospice-Hannibal, and Willow Care Nursing Home.
Long active in organized medicine, Dr. Johnson is a Past President of the Northeast Missouri County Medical Society, a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, and a member of the American Medical Association to which he is an Alternate Delegate from Missouri. He is also a member of the Medical Group Management Association.
He is an active member of the Organized Medical Staff Section of the AMA representing the Hannibal Clinic, and serves as the Missouri State Chair for OMSS. He currently sits on the Primaris Board of Directors. He was also a Missouri PRO Reviewer for many years.
A member of the Missouri State Medical Association for 28 years, he has served on the Association’s Council for 26 of those. Dr. Johnson has served in a succession of posts in the Association including the Committee on Legislative Affairs and the Budget and Finance Committee. He is also a member of the Missouri Medical Political Action Committee.
Dr. Johnson has been active in his community through involvement in the First Christian Church of Hannibal, and he has served on the Hannibal Parks Board for many years.
Dr. Johnson’s spouse, Sandra Ahlum, MD, practices obstetrics and gynecology in Hannibal. Together they have two children. Emily is completing her dental residency in New York City and will be married in October. Cliff is a second year graduate student in the doctorate program in Astronomy at the University of Washington in Seattle.
