Dr. Barbe, a board-certified family physician from Missouri, was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees on June 16,
during he Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates in Chicago.
“I am honored to be elected to the AMA Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Barbe. “I look forward to representing physicians
as the AMA and the nation focus on health-care reform.”
Dr. Barbe’s multifaceted career spans nearly three decades of service, including many top leadership positions in his
local, state and family practice specialty organizations. He has served on the AMA’s Council of Medical Service for two
terms, acting this year as its chair. Dr. Barbe has also chaired the Council’s subcommittee on medical payment and
financing. He has served on the AMA’s Physicians Data Release Task Force and as the AMA designee to URAC, an
accreditation body.
Dr. Barbe has practiced family medicine in his hometown of Mountain Grove, Missouri for 25 years, delivering
comprehensive medical care including pediatrics, obstetrics and adult medicine. He also oversees all clinic operations
of St. John’s Clinic, Regional Division, in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas.
Dr. Barbe received his medical degree and Master of Health Administration from the University of Missouri and
completed his residency in family practice in Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Barbe and his wife, Debbie, currently live in
Mountain Grove, Missouri.
Dr. Barbe’s term on the Board lasts four years.
“I am pleased to see a mix of both fresh and familiar faces on the Board of Trustees,” said Rebecca J. Patchin, M.D.,
an anthesthesiogist and pain management specialist from Loma Linda, Calif., whose one-year term as AMA board chair began
today. “We will use innovative ideas as well as proven methods to continue to serve America’s physicians and patients
this year as we work to reform the health system for patients and physicians.”
J. James Rohack, M.D., a cardiologist from Bryan, Texas, is the Association’s 164th president, while Cecil B. Wilson,
M.D., an internal medicine physician from Winter Park, Fla., assumes the position of president-elect.
