MSMA Membership Sections & Guidelines


The Missouri State Medical Association has developed special membership sections in accordance with our Bylaws to address the unique interests and concerns of association members.

​Active Members
Members of this Association shall be those individuals who are legally qualified physicians practicing in Missouri, except as otherwise provided. Each member must be of good moral and professional standing, and must not support, nor practice, nor claim to practice any exclusive system of medicine. In component societies which require membership in the Association, the Association shall require members to belong to the component society. Active members shall be limited to those members who (1) hold the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor of Medicine, and (2) members who hold the degree of Doctor of Osteopathy.

Young Physician Section
The Young Physician Section is limited to Missouri State Medical Association members who are under the age of 41 and are in their first five years of practice. The purpose of this section is to address issues affecting young physicians.

Resident and Fellow Section 
Resident members shall be limited to those members of the Resident and Fellow Section who are serving a full-time postgraduate training program approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association and shall enjoy all of the privileges of active membership. The purpose of the RFS is to address issues affecting resident physicians.

Medical Student Section 
Student members shall be limited to those members of the Medical Student Section who are pursuing a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy in a medical school approved by the American Medical Association or American Osteopathic Association and shall have all the privileges of active membership.  The Section shall be the unifying body for the independent Medical School Component Societies in the state. Organized Medical Staff Section
The Organized Medical Staff Section is limited to Missouri State Medical Association members who are also members of a hospital medical staff in a Missouri hospital, and who are selected by the physician members of their respective medical staff. The purpose of this section is to address the issues affecting organized medical staffs.

International Medical Graduate Section
Membership in the International Medical Graduate Section shall be limited to Missouri State Medical Association Members who are also graduates of an international medical school. The purpose of this section is to address issues affecting international medical graduates.

Women Physicians Section
A resolution that established the MSMA Women Physicians Section (WPS) was approved at the 2019 MSMA Annual Convention. All female MSMA members are welcome to participate in the Section’s activities.  Click here to apply.  Contact Heidi Sutherland or call 573-691-4512.

Honor Members
Honor members shall be limited to active members who have reached advanced years and have long served the Association and the profession. They shall enjoy all the privileges of active membership.

Special Dues-Exempt Members
These shall be limited to those members who have been elected to the U.S. Congress, the Missouri State Legislature, or to an office in the executive branch of the state or federal government. They shall be exempt from the payment of dues until the term of their political office expires, and shall enjoy all the privileges of active membership.

Affiliate Members
These shall be those individuals who contribute to the health care of the public through employment service to MSMA members and component societies and who are not otherwise eligible for active membership. The criteria for affiliate membership and the policies governing the participation of affiliate members shall be established and maintained by the Council. Affiliate members shall have no voting rights nor will this class of membership apply toward House of Delegates or Council representation.  Some restrictions apply.
