As WPS chair and co-author of this resolution, I speak on behalf of the authors and the Women Physician Section in support of this resolution. In 2019, MSMA took a monumental step by creating a Women Physician Section to address unique challenges and disparities that women physician face in daily practice. Though the discrimination that women in medicine face has improved greatly over the past century such that now 50% of American medical students are female, research continues to reveal disparities between genders in regards to pay equity, career advancement, and promotion. This resolution asks the MSMA to make known their support for gender equity throughout all aspects of medical practice. Additionally, it asks MSMA to encourage health care organizations and academic institutions to evaluate their own methods in compensation and pay promotion so as to reduce unconscious gender bias that may compromise hiring and promotional practices.
