Young Physician Leaders from MSMA at the AMA
By Laurin Council and Albert Hsu

The Young Physician Section (YPS) of the AMA includes any physicians who are less than 40 years of age *or* within the first 8 years of practice (after residency or fellowship training). At the Chicago meeting, AMA-YPS adopted three resolutions to be forwarded to the HOD in November, on Basic Courses in Nutrition; Ensuring Access to Safe and Quality Care for our Veterans; and Public Health Impacts and Unintended Consequences of Cannabis for Medicinal and Recreational Use. U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, MD, provided an inspirational lunchtime talk about his efforts to fight the opioid epidemic, reduce stigmas, and ensure patient access to life-saving naloxone.  He also mentioned the importance of showing the links between community health and economic prosperity.

In the HOD, one important resolution to the YPS addressed in-office compounding, in response to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards for compounded sterile preparations. Reconstitution and preparation of medications administered in outpatient clinics is a standard procedure in many medical specialties, including primary care, dermatology, and allergy medicine. For example, preparation of allergy injections, buffering of lidocaine with sodium bicarbonate, and dilution of intralesional triamcinolone are standard outpatient office practices. However, the UPS is an independent non-profit organization, and its standards for in-office compounding was seen as an attempt by a non-physician organization to regulate the practice of medicine, establishing a dangerous precedent and threatening our scope of practice.

Additional topics discussed during the meeting included:

  • Legislation for “Mature Minor” Consent to Vaccinations
  • Public health impacts of legalization of cannabis
  • Bullying in the Practice of Medicine
  • Destigmatizing the Language of Addiction
  • Peer Support Groups for Second Victims
  • Dispelling Myths of Bystander Opioid Overdose

If you or someone you know is a young physician who may be interested in getting involved in the MSMA-YPS and/or AMA-YPS, please email Haley Wansing or call 800-869-6762 and/or visit the AMA-YPS webpage at https://www.ama-assn.org/yps-annual-overview.

Respectfully submitted by Laurin Council, representative to AMA-YPS; Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Dermatology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis; and Albert Hsu, Immediate Past Chair of MSMA-YPS (and MSMA representative to AMA-YPS); Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, University of Missouri, Columbia.

Young Physician Section Delegate and Alternate Delegate Overview
The MSMA Young Physician Section (YPS) is allowed one delegate and one alternate delegate to serve on the MSMA House of Delegates (HOD) each year. The HOD meets annually at the MSMA Annual Convention. The 2020 Convention will be held April 3-5 at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel.

The YPS Delegate must be a member in good standing with MSMA. She/he will be the voting member for YPS within the House of Delegates. The Alternate Delegate must also be a member in good standing with MSMA. The Alternate Delegate will stand in for the Delegate if she/he is unable to attend.

Responsibilities of Delegate:
  • Be the voting member for the YPS at the MSMA House of Delegates.
  • Review the Delegate Handbook prior to attending the MSMA Annual Convention. The Handbook will be mailed to Delegates in advance of the Annual Convention. All resolutions submitted by the February 1 deadline will be included in the handbook.
  • The YPS Delegate will be expected to attend:
  • Opening Session of the House of Delegates to be held Friday, April 3, at 8 a.m. at the Convention Hotel.
  • At least one Reference Committee meeting on Friday, April 3, 2020. The Reference Committee meetings overlap, so a delegate will not be able to attend the entirety of both meetings. Reference Committee A meets at 10 a.m.; Reference Committee B meets at 10:30 a.m.
  • Second Session of the House of Delegates to be held Sunday, April 5 at 8:15 a.m. at the Convention Hotel.
  • Delegates MUST register at the Registration Booth and identify themselves as a Delegate. The Delegate will then receive the Delegate’s badge. Each Delegate elected to the House of Delegates by his/her component medical society or section will be included on a Delegate’s List at the MSMA Registration Desk.
  • Only duly elected Delegates have the privilege of the floor at meetings of the House of Delegates. A Delegate may request the privilege of the floor for any other individual, and the Speaker may grant or deny privilege for the non-Delegate to speak.

Proceedings of the House of Delegates are conducted in accordance with Sturgis Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, 4th Edition.
